Why Taron Egerton Had to Cut Off His Dad

Some relationships just run out of road. Actor Taron Egerton recently pulled back the curtain on his personal life, admitting he hasn't spoken to his father in years after choosing to "push the ejector seat" on the dynamic.

When family ties become entirely unsustainable, walking away isn't a failure. Sometimes it's the only functional choice left.

The Reality Behind the Estrangement

During an appearance on Dax Shepard's Armchair Expert podcast, the 36-year-old star opened up about his upbringing. Born in Birkenhead, Egerton saw his parents divorce when he was just two years old. He moved to Wales with his mother, while his father stayed involved loosely, running a bed and breakfast in Liverpool.

For a long time, things were fine on the surface. They maintained a functional baseline. But adulthood changes the math of family dynamics. As Egerton grew older, keeping that connection afloat grew increasingly difficult.

Instead of forcing a toxic dynamic to persist, he made a hard call. He cut ties completely.

"I'll always love him," Egerton shared on the podcast. "I just don't think we work very well in terms of our relationship and so there was a point where I pushed the ejector seat and haven't seen him since."

Reframing What Makes a Good Parent

It's easy to villainize people when family structures shatter. Egerton refuses to take that cheap route. He noted that he believes his father genuinely wanted to be a good dad.

Accepting that someone tried their best doesn't mean you have to subject yourself to their presence. That distinction matters. You can hold empathy for a person's underlying intentions while acknowledging that the actual relationship damages your mental health.

Looking back, the actor also reflected on the quiet pressures of his childhood. Being raised by a single mother who worked hard to earn a degree and make ends meet left a mark. He admitted to carrying a baseline of anxiety that he only started recognizing recently. Even so, he credits his mother for providing a stable, secure foundation where he never felt short-changed.

Finding Guidance Elsewhere

Life often fills the gaps we leave behind. While navigating the intense early years of his career, Egerton found unexpected mentorship in Hollywood.

While filming Kingsman: The Secret Service, he hit a rough patch. Dealing with a painful breakup, he leaned into heavy partying as a coping mechanism. Director Matthew Vaughn even had to send him home on certain days because he wasn't fit to shoot.

Enter Colin Firth.

Firth stepped into a fatherly role, offering steady guidance instead of judgment. Rather than chewing him out, Firth remained gentle, understanding, and supportive. When the film wrapped, Firth texted him a simple, validating note: "You are note perfect."

Positive male figures don't always share your DNA. Sometimes they show up on a movie set when you're completely lost.

Protecting Your Peace

Walking away from family members carries an unfair social stigma. People love to preach about blood being thicker than water. They forget that the full phrase is actually "the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb"β€”meaning chosen bonds often run deeper than biological ones.

If a relationship constantly drains your energy, you don't owe anyone a lifetime of forced interaction. Setting hard boundaries isn't cruel. It's preservation.

Take a cue from how Egerton handles it. Acknowledge the past, wish them well from afar, and protect your own functionality. You can't pour from an empty cup, and you certainly shouldn't set yourself on fire to keep a broken relationship warm.
