Pundits talk about the tragic loss of brave pilots. Social media fills with black-and-white photos of the aircraft, accompanied by dramatic tributes to fallen heroes.

Nobody wants to ask the obvious question because it feels cold. But someone has to say it out loud.

We are mourning the pilots, and we should. But we are also shedding tears for a flying deathtrap that should have been parked in a desert boneyard twenty years ago.

The lazy consensus from defense commentators treats every vintage aircraft loss as an unpredictable bolt from the blue. They talk about weather, maintenance quirks, or bad luck.

They refuse to confront the institutional cowardice keeping these relics in the air.

The Budget Shell Game

Military budgets are zero-sum games dictated by political theater and bureaucratic inertia. Buying fifth-generation fighters requires massive capital outlays, multi-year political battles, and wrenching logistical overhauls. So ministries choose the path of least resistance. They squeeze every last drop of utility out of legacy fleets. They trade pilot safety for fiscal convenience.

Every time a legacy fighter goes down due to catastrophic structural failure or obsolete flight control redundancies, military leadership acts shocked. They launch investigations. They ground the fleet for a week. Then they put the planes right back up in the air because the replacement program is twenty years behind schedule and three times over budget.

It is a systemic failure masquerading as an accident.

The Training Trap

The defense establishment argues that these older jets are essential for training pipelines. They claim younger pilots need to log hours on mechanical, non-fly-by-wire platforms to build real stick-and-rudder skills before transitioning to modern smart jets.

This argument is pure nostalgia.

We do not train commercial airline pilots in Ford Trimotors to teach them how to handle a Boeing 787. We do not teach modern infantrymen how to fight with muskets to build better trigger discipline. Warfare has evolved past the point where manual brute-force aircraft handling translates to survival in a contested airspace.

Modern combat is about sensor fusion, electronic warfare, and cognitive management under extreme G-loads. Wrestling with heavy, unresponsive hydraulic controls from the 1960s does not make a pilot better at managing a tactical network-centric battlefield. It just teaches them how to fight an airplane that is actively trying to kill them before the enemy even enters visual range.

If an airframe requires superhuman physical strength and constant mechanical vigilance just to stay aloft in clear weather, it is not a trainer. It is a hazard.

The Cost of Sentimentality

We romanticize military aviation to a fault. We wrap ourselves in the flag and talk about the eternal romance of stick and throttle.

That sentimentality is lethal.

When we treat the loss of a vintage jet as a noble sacrifice to military tradition, we let the procurement bureaucrats off the hook. We absolve them of their duty to provide their personnel with equipment built for the century we are actually living in.

Pilots sign up knowing the risks. They accept that military aviation is dangerous. But they do not sign up to fly antiquities held together by prayer charts and legacy maintenance budgets.

Stop blaming bad luck for the destruction of ancient airframes. Stop accepting that older planes are just part of the price of doing business.

Retire the phantoms. Park the relics. Melt down the aluminum and build simulators, drones, or modern jets that respect the lives of the people flying them.

Until defense ministries value pilot safety over budget preservation, these preventable tragedies will keep happening. And every time one does, remember that the crash wasn't an accident. It was a choice.
