The Shift Toward Controlled Burning

Rethinking Rural Economies

Forest management isn't just about matches and helicopters. It ties directly into how people live in rural areas.

Decades ago, local communities actively used European forests. Farmers grazed goats and sheep, which ate the low brush. Villagers collected fallen wood for winter heating. Charcoal burners harvested small timber.

This human presence kept fuel loads naturally low.

We also need to rethink timber policies. Planting endless rows of identical pine or eucalyptus trees for fast commercial profit creates ecological monocultures that burn like matchboxes. Diversifying species—mixing in fire-resistant deciduous trees like oak and chestnut—slows down fire spread naturally. Oak bark holds moisture far better than dry pine resin.

Living With Fire

Europe cannot bomb its way out of the megafire crisis with more water planes. Climate change will continue pushing temperatures higher and stretching droughts longer. Summers will stay brutal.

The strategy must evolve from absolute fire suppression to community resilience and ecological adaptation.

That means accepting that fire is a natural process we must manage, not a total enemy we can eliminate. It means clearing defensible space around rural homes, investing heavily in prescribed burns during winter, and letting go of the illusion that we can keep every acre of wilderness in a pristine glass bubble.

The alternative is watching our landscapes burn down to the roots, one terrifying summer at a time.
