We got a spotlight on a company developing some really sick packages lately, for use in your motion graphics and visual effects productions... check out the details on these guys after the jump!

So we picked up another sponsor in the sidebar, the last week or so, and I have been checking out some of their products… and well… there is a lot of stuff in these packs! At first glance, you think… oh another Riot Gear type of package… but no no no… WAY MORE stuff than in Riot Gear, and these all deal with specific types of elements!

Were talking like 30 Film Dirt & Scratches, 46 Ink Plumes, 80 Animated Arrows, 115 Animated Paint Strokes, 53 Animated Spray Paints, and 43 Animated Paint Splats! I mean, that is a lot of elements, and variety in those elements to choose from! And the best thing, is each type of element is its own package, so you don’t have to buy everything together, just to get, say a selection of arrows.

All the packages are really well created, providing AI and EPS files, as well as the Quicktimes that go along with them in animation form. All pre-keyed, with alpha channels so there is no messing around with that stuff. All elements are in 1080p and are ready to rock for your convenience!

Along with these Motion Graphic and VFX themed packages, they also have Vector Imagery, RampanTV tutorials, Texture and Photo products, and After Effects Templates available as well! They seriously have something for every type of project…

Check out their product videos for some of their latest products, and head over to their website and see what you can use for your own productions!

Who doesn't love prizes like licenses of Nuke, Fusion or possibly a new Mac Pro workstation? Well I love them and you should too! VFXTalk.com had a ton of contests a while back with some high stakes prizes but they kind of quit with the challeges there for a while. But they are back with some killer prizes and a Star Trek themed challenge to get your creative juices flowing! (details after the jump)

VFX401 – Star Trek Soldier of Fortune
Submissions Start: February 5th 2010
Submissions End: March 5th 2010

The Star Trek Soldier of Fortune Challenge

It´s stardate 2258, James T. Kirk has been charged with mutiny and has been marooned on the planet Delta Vega by Spock, who is now the commander of the starship USS Enterprise. Fortunatly for Kirk, Starfleet has hired a soldier of fortune and sent him to find and rescue Kirk! Planet Delta Vega is a bleak and barren ice planet, filled with countless life threatening dangers!

To move quickly on the snow, the soldier will be riding a next generation snowboard with plasma thrusters and a anti-gravity engine. He is also wearing a force field based spacesuit which surrounds him with an invisible barrier that keeps out the extreme cold and allows him to move about freely.

Your challenge is to re-create this hostile environment and integrate the supplied video footage depicting the soldier travelling at speed on his board, tweaking it to match the Stardate! You will also need to show that the soldier is fleeing from a natural, mechanical or alien disaster of your choice so let your imaginations run riot!

You can introduce 2D or 3D elements, modify the video footage we supply and use your matte painting skills if you so wish. The only must is that you will need to generate realistic ice and snow to ensure that the scene is as real as it can be! Put your VFX skills to the test by creating the scene as you see fit!

Hey everyone! I have been hard at work, setting up a green screen studio in my basement so that I can up the production level of the VLOGs. I have some great ideas in mind… and the VLOGs are hopefully going to be a weekly thing once i get a schedule down. In the meantime, you can check out the rad array of tutorials that I have been collecting this week, as well as read my weekly articles over at AEtuts+, as well as my latest – “A Concise Guide To After Effects Keyboard Shortcuts“.

fineCG.com, a new site from Maltaannon, and his buddies at Polygon Studio are bringing you tutorials from all kinds of different aspects in the Visual Effects realm. The first tutorial, called 3D Sport Animation, takes a 3D low poly model of a human and makes the whole body particles using Pflow and animates while it kicks around a soccer ball (football). Check out fineCG.com HERE and watch the tutorial HERE and download the project files HERE.

A very popular request is how to make a logo breakup into particles and reform into another logo. There’s many ways to achieve this and most of them require a full 3D application, but in this tutorial we learn how to achieve it all in After Effects using a 3D particle systems and a few smoke and mirrors.
He takes us through the steps of darkening and colouring the image to look like night, and then creates a light source to turn the street lamps on as well as giving the light a fall-off on the road below.
He also demonstrates how to use motion tracking and masking techniques to successfully sit the new piece of footage on a moving billboard and behind tree branches. It’s a versatile technique that can be applied to a range of uses including: replacing letters on number plates, putting signs on windows and replacing existing video footage on screens with other footage. LINK HERE

Nick Campbell has another GSGcast exploring even more aspects of Cinmea4D. From Nick: “Thanks to Chad Ashley at CGPOV, I finally understand how working in 2.2 gamma space can help achieve more realistic results. Many video professionals do not know much about the camera raw interface because it is a technology mainly used by digital photographers. The key advantage to using with a camera raw file is that the data is usually stored in the picture more than you can normally see in a single exposure.
