Okay, so its been quite a while since the last tutorial roundup, but for good reason... this isn't even all the new tutorials! I still have about a hundred sites to check, but I know you all are itching for a new roundup, since it has been quite a few weeks since the last one. I am thinking it might be better from now on to post mini-roundups with 25-50 tutorials, or these huge roundups... let me know what you think in the comments!

In this tutorial, I show you how to stop time in your Mograph Dynamic renders. I call it the “Matrix Effect” where time stops or stands still for a moment before it starts again. I’ll show you how I use the Project Settings to control the speed and timing of an explosion.

In response to a question from: ITV Teacher With help from This tutorial and CG Society.

SplatterType is a custom preset I have developed recently that will allow you to create amazing ink and paint splatter animations with just a few clicks. Whether you’re after a dark, grungy look or happy-go-lucky colorful design, whether you’re compositing 2D, 3D, mattes, transitions, you name it – this little free preset will let you spend time on creative choices rather than tedious keyframing. Enjoy!

In this After Effects tutorial I will show you how to create a cool underwater opening title sequence. Rather than using Trapcode Particular (which many of you may not have installed) or CC Particle World (which really could use an update to its coordinate system) the project fakes particle simulation through use of text animators. This quite lengthy tutorial is derived from another Video Bits project I created a while ago. The original Alphabet Soup used Particular and wasn’t much more than an eye-candy. The new-and-improved one I present to you today can actually be used for something else than ambient displays

Password hacking is usually presented as a quite dull process in Hollywood visuals. It is even more dull in real life. In this tutorial I will show you my take on a HolOS password hacking interface – spicing it up with After Effects 2.5D crossword puzzle look. The idea for this tutorial comes from one of the Video Bits projects published back in 2008: Crossword Hax. I think enough time has passed since I created that effect, so I decided to share it with the community.

Revealing handwritten text is one of these unpleasant tasks every motion designer has to deal with at least once. In this tutorial I present possibly the quickest and most efficient way of producing this effect. Since the reveal effect itself is quite simple to produce and would result in a very short tutorial, I added some bulk to the video by presenting a smart way of guiding a null along the reveal, using it to drive different effects, such as a lens flare or particles.

One of the most frequently (over)used After Effects lens flares is undoubtedly Chroma Lens 2 preset available in Knoll Light Factory Pro. As many other motion designers I, too am guilty of using this effect in a few projects too many. As I am currently migrating my flare workflow to Video Copilot’s Optical Flares plug-in, I decided to re-create this client-favorite preset inside the VCOP.

Working in Photoshop I often find myself in need to turn an image into a stencil – to remove all the white areas and turn them into transparency. While doing so is not technically very difficult, repeating the same set of commands over and over can get quite tedious on larger projects. That is why I constructed this simple Photoshop action, which I am now sharing with you. It will allow you to turn grayscale or full-color image into a stencil in just one click.

In starting a new series jokingly entitled “how to suck less”, this represents the first tutorial which explores photoshop’s vanishing point for export and its strength and weaknesses in the animation production pipeline. There are also some handy tips on how to get some control on a vanishing point export so that it remains effective in after effects, as well as some tips on using vanishing point to generate a quick camera with scene-correct settings that can be used as the start of camera mapping projections in after effects, maya or your 3D program of choice.

Dustin Nelson is an artist who is currently working for Bioware, and has created this 15 min tutorial where he explains some of the solutions using maya that can be used to create an animation control for objects that may be off axis. Typically, when objects are created, there are rarely concerns that the rotational axis would need to be off center. Below, you can see an example of this with a quick representation of a finger that is oriented with the grid. Here the rotational controls of the curves for the objects will clearly work well for animation.

Dustin shows three methods to achieve this, the first is by displaying and using a joint’s handle, the second is by parenting a control curve shape node without its transform to a joint, and finally the third method is by creating group nodes to hide transform values.

Here is an after effects tutorial on pixel match. I never record tutorials. But i’ll send this through.

This plugin allows you to move, rotate, scale, blur, blend and fade the RGB channels independently.

Breaks up text by character, word or line into separate layers.

Search for and edit text layers throughout your After Effects project. You can create your own text style presets and apply them to multiple layers at the click of a button.

Allows you to reposition the anchor point of the selected layers around the layer edges while keeping the layers at the same position in the comp window.

Creates a 3D box, a 3D sphere, a 3D cylinder, a 3D pyramid, a 3D menger sponge and even 3D falling dominoes with user-defined layers.

Reverses the direction of selected text layers. Useful for RightToLeft language input.

Export a document listing of your After Effects project assets

Arranges project items into folders based on a matching prefix.

Computes the movement of maskshapes based on the movement of trackpoints. I’m noticing that some people enjoy seeing motion graphics/broadcast animation tutorials so here it goes. This end result certainly isn’t and Oscar-winner, but it does show a number of things that everyone should know. This could be a way to create simple, yet functional screen-cast opener for example… We’ll start in Photoshop (perhaps Illustrator would be better, but since I don’t have it yet, I used Photoshop) and then dive in AE till the end of the tut. I worked hard doing this and preparing all the stuff so I hope you enjoy it. Let’s get started!

We spend so much time trying to make footage look old… but what if your footage already is old? I guess you’d have to color it then, right? That, and take junk out. So here’s a basic tut to walk through how it can be done.
