Playing with fire will no longer get in trouble with your mother! High quality fluid dynamics has traditionally been reserved for high end 3D applications, but in this tutorial we learn to harness these simulations in After Effects to literally play with fire and create this fiery logo transition.

In this video tutorial, Creative Cow leader Michael Park shows you how to create a realistic 3D earth, complete with clouds and atmosphere, using only After Effects’ built in effects. Special attention will be given to combining mulitple instances of the CC Sphere effect to create unique layers with different specular properties for the land and water masses, as well as creating lights from urban centers on the night side of the earth. LINK HERE

Mixed lighting on a photo can cause portions of the image to be too bright or too dark, fortunately Photoshop gives us some great tools to take care of these types of issues. Using a levels adjustment layer in combination with a color range selection, Richard is able to greatly control the lighting in a photo. The equalize command is also covered in this video tutorial.
We as editors take things for granted, without appreciating where it came from. As a Shake user, I loved SmoothCam, and when I found out they were bringing it to Final Cut Studio 2, I was really excited. I decided, for this article, to look at SmoothCam, where it came from, and how it evolved from Shake.

I’m sure that a lot of you are already aware that you can drag a material straight from the Material Manager onto an object and that material will be assigned to that object. Did you know, you can use a similar technique to actually restrict to Selection Sets.
To a cinematographer this can be an undesired effect, but in motion graphics it can be a very nice addition. While it would be great to capture chromatic aberration naturally with real lenses, most modern lenses aim to minimize this effect. This is why we are dedicating this tutorial to learning how to recreate this phenomenon using built-in after effects plugins.

But, what if you could use ONE layer to rule control them all?
Here is a handy solution. LINK HERE
So to get something new and original, sometimes you just need to go Old School! Before computers, the way to produce type animations was to get creative with some props and a camera. Lloyd shows us how to use some reflective paper and a camera to capture some very fresh type animation. Of course he will also show you how to use After Effects as a finishing tool to bring it all together; this is Aetuts+ after all!

TAKEN FROM VIDEOCOPILOT.NET – For anyone using CC Particle World instead of Particular, you may know that Particular’s Turbulent Field is not available. This feature allows random 3D displacement of a particles position. A similar effect can be achieved with Particle World by adding a TURBULENT DISPLACE effect. It works best with smaller particle and it has some limitations because it is only 2D but it is a nice way to get away from “perfect” particle movement. Download Project Comparison

A lot of these links have been taken from the DIGG article, but since I had already covered 3/4 of those tutorials and already posted them, I figure I would fine the others that would be worth posting. Oh, and if you saw that the site was down earlier, my hosting provider is having some issues. So if the site goes offline for a couple hours, don’t worry… we didn’t crash, there is probably just some internal maitenance going on.

This tutorial from Maltaannon show you how to create the growing 3D vines effect using ONLY After Effects, from the promo for Video Copilot’s TWITCH plugin for After effects

Another from Maltaannon he shows you how to create a CG snake with dynamic movement. Project Files are available as well.

.

Type animation is one of the most wonderful functions to play with in After Effects, especially since version 6 introduced actual text character animation control. With CS3 adding per-character 3D control, typographic motion design has never been more fun. Let’s create some cool smoky type.
LINK HERE

One of the toughest things to achieve in After Effects is a true feeling of space, environment, and temperature even. One way to infuse your scene with reality is to add light—and not simply a spotlight with a feathered edge and a few shadows here and there, but a realistic light cast from the very essential form of illumination: fire!

[If you’d like to preview the final effect, click here to download. All files are for personal use only.]
.

So in this tutorial I’m going to show you how to create a spray paint effect using After Effects. It’s a fairly simple process but I’ve got a few tricks that you may not have thought of. Here is a sample video of what you’ll be creating. Here are the AE project files.

.

Without lights in a scene, After Effects will automatically illuminate all 3D layers equally. The layers are linked to the position of the Flare, so everything moves together. You can change the color from the “FLARE” solid effects control to create a golden sun or even a red sun. Have fun, just don’t look directly at it.

In this 2 part tutorial AETUTS editor Lloyd Alvarez gets his hands dirty with a little expression math to create some beautifully organic light streaks that are used to reveal the AETUTS logo. In part 1 Lloyd breaks down the science behind creating a simple expression that drives the light streak emitter and shows you how easy it is to create infinite variations with ease.

Composting is the art of combining multiple images into a unified final scene. All professional productions are rendered in multiple layers or passes and finished though compositing. When you render in passes, you render different attribute of an image separately such as color, shadow, specularity, reflection, contact shadows and depth. It gives you precise control over the different aspects of your scene. Once you render the passes in given 3D application, you can bring them into the composting software like Fusion, Shake or After Effects and generate a quite nice result after fine tuning the passes. LINK HERE
