iPhone 4 Music Video Project by Topher Welsh & Keith Rivers

This is a music video that my friend, Keith Rivers (krivers.com) and I decided to create a couple days after the iPhone 4 came out. It takes a look at the video quality in a low light situation, and how well the LED light works with the phone while recording video. Take a look at the video below:

So this actually wasn’t edited with the iMovie application, instead it was cut inside of Final Cut, color corrected with the 3 Way Color Corrector, and then done. We found that the LED Flash is actually a really good light, if you want to be shooting stuff just for fun, not for quality. The phone actually does an okay job of exposing the video correctly with its touch focusing, but the video still comes out pretty grainy… to be expected with a camera like this. I kind of like how the color of the candles gives the orange, and the LED gives that blue for that “Hollywood Cinema Look” that is so hot right now… The same kind of look that Magic Bullet Mojo was based off of.

We used a couple of different things to stabilize the camera, for one, we used a Nasty Clamp of mine to clamp onto the phone so that we wouldn’t have to grip the edges of the phone, instead, we had a handle of sorts. Secondly, we used the flat design of the side of the phone to slide it across the floor for a few of the candle shots. Other than that, it was just a matter of getting our arms resting on something so that we could keep it steady.

The audio isn’t actually from the phone either… it was from a Zoom H4N’s onboard mics, and synced it all up later. There isn’t much else in the details department. We shot this on Capitol Hill in Seattle, towards about 9:30pm. Big thanks to Daniel Kamas for letting us hang out and do this… it was a fun experience.
